But as they were leaving, one of the group from Winona pointed out something on the ground to one of the county commissioners with her. It was a dead bat. Nearby was another. As one of NWW’s correspondents commented, Lampa will have to make sure the clean-up crew does a better job before the next tour!

As with birds and bats, there are no reliable studies of the effect of industrial wind turbine facilities on other animals. The installation of such large structures in wild areas, along with supporting roads and transmission infrastructure and the clearing of trees on mountain ridges, inevitably has a negative effect, if only because of the loss, degradation, and fragmentation of habitat, especially ecologically vital interior forest. The turbines also move (producing noise and vibration) and are lit by strobes day and night, adding to the distressing impact they likely have.
Until good studies are done, we have anecdotal evidence such as the following about the effect of a wind facility on Backbone Mountain, West Virginia: “I looked around me, to a place where months before had been prime country for deer, wild turkey, and yes, black bear, to see positively no sign of any of the animals about at all. This alarmed me, so I scouted in the woods that afternoon. All afternoon, I found no sign, sight, or peek of any animal about.”

One of the most negative impacts of wind farms constructed on peat soils include the release of large amounts of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere during installation of the wind farms, contributing to climate change. Peatlands act as carbon sinks holding the bulk of Ireland’s carbon store, which is locked up in the peat soil. The construction of wind turbines on peatlands causes desiccation of the peat soil and so upsets the carbon accumulation process and leads to an increase in the amount of carbon dioxide released to the atmosphere from the peatland.
The threat of wind farm development to blanket bog habitats was assessed as part of the Assessment of priority habitats and species carried out by the NPWS (2006). They reported that 39 of 56 wind farms surveyed were located on blanket bog. Out of the 39 wind farms, 20 have been constructed on relatively intact blanket bog.
IPCC (Irish Peatland Conservation Council) have noted several incidences of bog bursts occurring during the construction of wind farms and their associated works, such as road construction on deep peat. Bog bursts associated with wind farm construction in recent years have occurred at Derrybrien, Co. Galway in 2003; Stacks Mountains, Co. Kerry in 2008; Carrane Hill Bog in 2008 and the Corrie Mountains, Co Leitrim in 2008 (C. Douglas NPWS pers. comm., 26 April 2009). Bog bursts not only destroy the peatland habitat present but they also pose a massive risk to drinking water supplies, cause juvenile fish kills and destruction of the aquatic environment when the displaced peat enters local water courses.
